MIL-DTL-15024 Type L, Style 1

BlackPlus™

Laser-markable black anodized aluminum impregnated with silver compounds.

TYPE L STYLE 1 has the benefits of laser marking (on-demand, short run friendly; pre-fabricated blanks with adhesive pre-applied), but lacks some of the durability of TYPE H. Because the laser marking removes the anodic later where ablated, TYPE L STYLE 1 is unacceptable for salt spray applications. However, it will outperform all other engraved TYPE L materials.

Intended for fiber or YAG laser marking.  If a CO2 laser is used (most common type) then the laser etched graphic will be higher contrast if the material is subject to a chemical conversion treatment (Alodine®) post marking.  This process is explained in MIL-DTL-5541F.

Pre-fabricated blanks cut to custom size/thickness available; basic metal fabrication (shear, corner rounder) required if correct blank size not on-hand.

MIL-DTL-15024 Type L, Style 2

DuraBlack®

Laser-markable black aluminum sheet coated with a weatherable, abrasion-resistant coating.

TYPE L Style 1 has the benefits of laser marking (on-demand, short run friendly; pre-fabricated blanks with adhesive pre-applied), but lacks some of the durability of TYPE H Designed for long term installation up to 10 years outdoors, except in salt spray environments; DuraBlack is rated for 4,000 cycles on the Tabor Abraser and is resistant to a variety of chemicals.

Available with or without a variety of high-performance adhesives; custom sized blanks available.

Sheet Sizes:

  • 12″ x 20″
  • 20″ x 24″

Finishes

  • White or silver mark on black background
  • 0.002″
  • 0.005″

Standard flat-bed CO2 marking laser of 35 watts or higher. Not recommended for fiber lasers.

MIL-DTL-15024 Type L, Style 2

DuraRed™

Laser-markable red aluminum sheet coated with a weatherable, abrasion-resistant coating.

TYPE L Style 1 has the benefits of laser marking (on-demand, short run friendly; pre-fabricated blanks with adhesive pre-applied), but lacks some of the durability of TYPE H Designed for long term installation up to 10 years outdoors; DuraRed™ is rated for 4,000 cycles on the Tabor Abraser and is resistant to a variety of chemicals.

Available with or without a variety of high-performance adhesives; custom sized blanks available.

Sheet Sizes:

  • 12″ x 20″
  • 20″ x 24″

Finishes

  • White or silver mark on red background
  • 0.002″
  • 0.005″

Standard flat-bed CO2 marking laser of 35 watts or higher. Not recommended for fiber lasers.

MIL-DTL-15024 Type L, Style 3

Phenolic Plastic

Two-ply laser markable or rotary engravable plastic.

Does not pass abrasion test, can crack if mechanically installed, limited adhesive options.

Available in many colors, passes salt fog testing.

Sheet Sizes:

  • 20″ x 49″

Finishes

  • Black or white mark on black, white or colored background
  • 0.0625″
  • 0.125″

Laser or rotary engraver.

MIL-DTL-15024 Type L, Style 4

LaserBond™

Steel or brass Materials pre-coated with an inorganic fusible ceramic compound.

TYPE L Style 1 has the benefits of laser marking (on-demand, short run friendly; pre-fabricated blanks with adhesive pre-applied).

Process is much faster than current TYPE B process, offers higher resolution, black graphics are bonded on the surface of the material and painting is not required. Uses equipment that runs on standard COTS software and equipment has multiple marking purposes.

Process disadvantages: Process is laser marking so every graphic must be produced with a laser beam.

Sheet Sizes:

  • 12″ x 20″
  • 20″ x 24″

Finishes

Black graphics on a natural background; various alloys and colors possible

Laser marking process. Laser heats the coated surface selectively. Where heated, the coating turns black and bonds to the material. Parts must be washed after marking to remove unmarked coating. Non-hazardous. If working with sheets of material, cut down to desired size and add holes. If pre-cut parts, material is ready to use.
